Who was Hall-Edwards (1858-1926)?
Major John Hall-Edwards was the British pioneer of X-ray treatment and the senior medical officer in charge of the X-ray department at Birmingham General Hospital for over 20 years. In 1908, radiological dermatitis resulted in Hall-Edwards requiring his lower left arm to be amputated. Undaunted, he donated the limb to Birmingham University’s Medical School where it’s still being used for teaching purposes.
